What’s different about the ballet’s financial crisis this time around is that it comes in the midst of a strategic makeover charted by arts consultant Michael Kaiser. Alan Hineline, the ballet’s chief executive officer, says the board has raised $2.7 million over the past two years and that the cash-flow problem stems from “paying for our past mistakes” — not current failures. But if it misses its funding goal by March 14, he said, it would affect more than just the current season — scheduled to continue March 27-29 with “Bodies of Technology” — and the company of 32 dancers. Also hard hit would be the 350-student Ballet San Jose School, a growing part of the company’s financial picture free images of ballet shoes.
The super-quick fundraising campaign called “Bridge to the Future” could lead to an interesting place: The relaunch of the company this fall as Silicon Valley Ballet, with the potential to take performances beyond downtown San Jose to communities like Palo Alto or Mountain View. Talking to Hineline, Artistic Director José Manuel Carreño and board chairwoman Millicent Powers, they’re all excited about the potential of reaching out to new audiences, even in places as far afield as Watsonville. “There is a wide variety of people here looking for cultural options,” Hineline said free images of ballet shoes.
