Last December, the production had its world premiere and was warmly received. No surprise, given its provenance. In more than three decades with the company, Gabay’s repertoire ran long and deep, with roles ranging from Giselle to the Cowgirl in Agnes de Mille’s Rodeo. But it was as Marie in Dennis Nahat’s rendition of The Nutcracker that she achieved lasting renown among local fans. Given the opportunity to put her stamp on the holiday classic, Gabay hewed to the blueprint as determined by American Ballet Theatre, Ballet San Jose’s artistic partner since 2011. But, she says, “There are more feminine touches; it’s told from a woman’s point of view.” She adds, “I try to keep it as more of a love story–of a girl who is just discovering the idea of love–rather than it being just about a candy palace.” pointe shoe maker salary.

The staging was inspired by the E.T.A. Hoffman story and features sets by Paul Kelly plus costumes by Theoni V. Aldredge, the Tony- and Oscar- winning designer. Live music will be provided by Symphony Silicon Valley, conducted by Ballet San Jose music director George Daugherty. Now artistic associate at Ballet San Jose, Gabay still makes use of her pointe shoes, just not in any official capacity with the company. She guest dances with other organizations. “I still take classes, even though I don’t have to. It’s hard to stop,” she says pointe shoe maker salary. “I’d feel worse if I didn’t take lessons.”..

The San Diego native will also eventually become involved with Project Plié, an initiative just launched by American Ballet Theatre with the goal of adding diversity to the country’s professional ballet ranks. She says that ABT executive director Stephanie Ziesel has talked to her about taking that on.. Even more change is afoot at Ballet San Jose, now that José Manuel Carreño is settling in as its new artistic director. The former ABT star fills the role last held by Gabay’s mentor Nahat, who was dismissed almost two years ago pointe shoe maker salary.

“I haven’t worked that much with him yet,” Gabay says of Carreño. “He’s now part of the organization and his presence is known pointe shoe maker salary. So far, so good.”. The assessment might also apply to Gabay’s dancing career. “I don’t put any time limit on it,” she says. “I go day by day. Right now I feel like I can still dance. If guest roles work out with my schedule, great. But my priority is here with Ballet San Jose. I have to honor that.”..

Jason Statham exercises great restraint in the opening minutes of “Homefront,” as his character, DEA agent Phil Broker, chooses to shoot an armed bad guy in the leg instead of blowing his brains out. Really, though, who wants to see Jason Statham exercise restraint? Part of the fun — no, all of the fun — of a Jason Statham movie is winding him up and letting him go. The best of his action movies are ballets of brute force: primal, precise and punishing best mens ballet shoes. “Homefront,” serviceably directed by television veteran Gary Fleder from a script by Sylvester Stallone (based on crime-novelist Chuck Logan’s book), isn’t Statham’s best — or most brutal — work, but it’s not bad..

The windup, in this case, comes after a winding down. Several months after that opening scene, Phil, a recent widower, has retired from police work, moving to small-town Louisiana with his young daughter, Maddy (Izabela Vidovic), to get away from it all best mens ballet shoes. Boy, did he pick the wrong town. No sooner have the Brokers unpacked than they’re getting into trouble with the locals, courtesy of Maddy, who decks a schoolyard bully (Austin Craig) one day. As it happens, the bully’s mother (an alarmingly emaciated Kate Bosworth) turns out to be one of the town’s many resident meth-heads. Even worse, Mom is sister to drug lord/psychopath Gator Bodine (James Franco), who isn’t very happy when he learns that his little nephew has a bloody nose..

But he really isn’t happy when he discovers — via a bit of harmless breaking-and-entering — that the father of the girl who gave the kid a bloody nose is an ex-narc best mens ballet shoes. Say goodbye to restraint. At this point, Gator and his goons start trying to run Phil out of town, which only makes our hero mad. This, of course, is precisely what makes fans of Jason Statham movies happiest. For the rest of us, it helps that Franco clearly relishes his role as the heavy here, lapping up the part like so much gumbo. The Academy Award nominee makes quite the entrance, pronouncing the name “Gator Bodine” like his tongue is doing a slow Cajun waltz around it, just before applying a baseball bat to the shins of a competitor who has had the temerity to horn in on Gator’s drug business..

And he’s not even the real bad guy. To help him get rid of Phil, Gator enlists some of Phil’s former enemies, with whom he liaises through the mediation of his ethically challenged biker-groupie girlfriend (Winona Ryder, clearly having too much fun). Thanks to such immoderate performances as hers, the whole movie has a pulpy, purple, over-the-topness to it, which makes it kind of a guilty pleasure, in a low-rent, Southern Gothic way. Sit back, relax and enjoy the excess, if you can best mens ballet shoes. Two stars. R. Contains strong violence, pervasive strong language, drug content and brief sexuality. 100 minutes..

No, it’s not “The Nutcracker.” The show, titled “A Winter Wonderland,” is an original story that features 44 Academy dancers ranging in age from 6 to 16 and five guest artists. Choreographer Crystal Petzel, who founded the Academy in 2009, described the show as family friendly. “We wanted to do something festive for the holiday season but something original,” she said. “We didn’t need another Nutcracker out there because there are millions of them.” drawings of ballet shoes easy.

The ballet tells the story of Beatrice, a girl who gets lost in the woods, befriended by forest animals and rescued by the Winter Fairy who takes her to Winter Wonderland drawings of ballet shoes easy. There, Beatrice meets the Peppermint Princess and has other adventures. The show is an hour and half in length and should keep the attention of small children, Petzel said. The theme is more seasonal than holiday, to make the show accessible to everyone. “There’s no Christmas tree or Santa Claus,” she said, adding that there are elves in Winter Wonderland..

This is the fourth year the ballet will be performed. In 2010, the it was performed in the studio only. As the years have progressed, the story has grown and evolved and Petzel has tried to add something new each year. Last year, the dancers presented mini performances to citizens at retirement homes. The children showed the seniors what a typical ballet class looked like and then did an excerpt from the show in full costume. Afterwards, they answered questions and interacted with the audience. “It’s really rewarding for the kids,” Petzel said drawings of ballet shoes easy.

Admission is free. For information, call 825-757-7337. Artists celebrate East County beauty. BRENTWOOD — “Everything Local,” an art exhibit celebrating the beauty of East Contra Costa County, runs through Dec. 27. The exhibit hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays at the Brentwood Community Center, 35 Oak St 3d printed pointe shoes. Presented by local art group The Brushoffs, subjects range from rustic back roads and Delta wildlife to homegrown flowers and farm-fresh produce, all created in a variety of media and styles. Work by sculptor Beverly Turner will also be featured..

The East Contra Costa County professional ballet company’s third Nutcracker — after renovations caused a two-year hiatus — will have all the necessary accouterments. There will be youngsters dressed as mice or soldiers; teens swirling like snowflakes or blooming with the splendor of spring flowers. Visitors from foreign lands will twirl umbrellas, twist behind veils and test the limits of leaping. A young Marie will receive a Nutcracker doll and her brother, Fritz, will tease and trouble her by breaking it. Falling asleep with the beloved doll, mended by the kindly relative who first bestowed the gift, a tree will grow and a battle ensue. The victor will take Marie on a global journey filled with magic, mystery and always, movement. Climactically, a dazzling Sugar Plum Fairy and her prince will inspire 3d printed pointe shoes.

Woven into the Nutcracker’s pirouettes and perfect lines of the corps de ballet, nostalgic memories of long-abandoned ballerina dreams and freshly-sprung visions of Sugar Plum Fairies-to-be will enlarge the audience experience. This is the power of Nutcracker — and the magnetic draw causing many families to attend year after year 3d printed pointe shoes. In 2009, choreographer Michael Lowe and BDBT Artistic Director Sharon Sobel Idul stepped up to maintain the classical ballet tradition when touring companies stopped bringing their productions to Pittsburg’s then-aging theater..

“We saw the need for a local, resident company to fill the void,” Idul said. The reception from the local community was brilliant, she said, but the subsequent two-year renovation interrupted her company’s momentum 3d printed pointe shoes. During the 2012 return, she says there were lingering “challenges of breaking in” the new stage. But there was no dearth of talent or enthusiasm. “I believe the community as a whole has a sincere passion and craving for the performing arts, but rarely an opportunity to share it,” Idul says. “Parents of our local student-trainees volunteer their skills through the costume design and sewing, marketing, community outreach, set design and construction — all very much a collaborative effort that fosters the production’s growth and originality.”..

As a young company, freelance professional dancers perform BDBC leading roles, accompanied in the major corps sections by approximately 30 nonprofessionals from Idul’s affiliated school, the nonprofit Delta Ballet Academy. This year’s Sugar Plum Fairy, McGee-Kelly, arrives upon the solid legs of her DBA and Joffrey Ballet training 3d printed pointe shoes. With Bay Area appearances including guest stints with Theater Ballet of San Francisco, Oakland Ballet, Peninsula Ballet Theater, and Ballet San Jose, she says in a news release, the ballet is “wonderfully magical to me.”..

Smuin Ballet was founded in 1994 by Michael Smuin, a well-known choreographer and a former artistic director of the San Francisco Ballet cheap pointe shoes. Smuin died in 2007, but the company continues to thrive, performing his ballets along with exciting new works from choreographers from all over the world. The company is celebrating its 20th anniversary this season, and has dubbed this year’s Christmas Ballet “XXmas” (XX being the Roman numeral for 20). The show consists of two acts, Classical Christmas and Cool Christmas. Each act is made up of a dozen or so three-minute pieces, bite-size chunks that make the show particularly accessible for children, hesitant spouses and other people new to dance-watching. It’s a delightful holiday outing for the whole family..

Holiday music provides the unifying theme of the show, along with festive costumes and set design. Smuin’s artistic director, Celia Fushille, says they strive for variety and balance when planning the program, to create a lively and entertaining show for audiences both young and old cheap pointe shoes. The Classical Christmas pieces are set to traditional and devotional music, and allow the Smuin dancers to display their outstanding ballet technique. Cool Christmas pieces feature popular music and are generally more light-hearted, showcasing the more theatrical and comedic talents of the dancers..

One piece sure to make the lineup this year is the perennial audience favorite, Michael Smuin’s “Santa Baby,” in which a spoiled but irresistible Santa petitioner struts in perilous heels and an enormous feather boa that stretches from one side of the stage to the other. Fushille was the first to perform the role, more than a decade ago. “The audience’s reaction when the boa just kept coming and coming — I’ll never forget it,” she says. Along with pieces by Smuin and other old favorites, there will be a crop of new dances. Among them will be a new work by choreographer-in-residence Amy Seiwert, for the Cool Christmas lineup cheap pointe shoes. Seiwert spent nine years dancing with Smuin Ballet, and has been creating works for the company since she retired as a dancer in 2008..

“Having performed eight years in The Christmas Ballet, after years of dancing in the Nutcracker — there’s just something about it,” says Seiwert. “The audience responds so well. They laugh out loud. They’re really interacting with you as a performer, and it’s a feeling you never forget.”. Her new piece, “I’ve Got My Love to Keep Me Warm,” will be set to a remix of the Irving Berlin song. Seiwert says the music almost always comes first when she’s creating a new work cheap pointe shoes. She finds a piece that speaks to her, and then she’ll study the score and listen to it over and over again, “until I’m almost sick of it,” she says..

At the first rehearsal of a new piece, Seiwert comes to the studio with a strong idea of the movement she wants and the number of dancers. She then proceeds to refine the movement, “like a sculptor, taking away what doesn’t need to be there to help the audience see the sculpture in the rock.”. When casting roles, Seiwert will look for dancers whose movement qualities and strengths will help her to bring out the story cheap pointe shoes. She observes “how they like to move and where their kinetic energy goes,” and uses those qualities to enhance the choreography. She loves smart dancers, and says the current company are “all incredibly smart and talented, and all so unique.”..
