The 12-year-old professional chamber company, which has won local and national accolades for presenting diverse, contemporary works, is undertaking a “shift” in its performance model that will focus on single projects, such as a Halloween ballet, slated to premiere in October 2015, and a one-day dance carnival in San Francisco in the summer of 2015. Anderson announced the changes, which include not renewing the contracts of its 14 dancers when the season ends in May, at its winter program “Edge and Entertainment” at the Lesher Center Thursday to Saturday. The program, which included two world premieres, repeats next weekend at Yerba Buena Gardens in San Francisco sansha demi pointe shoes.

Anderson, who co-founded the company, wouldn’t describe this shift as scaling back operations, but he acknowledged that the decision to give up a regular performance season in 2015 is in part due to ongoing funding challenges. Other factors also dictated this new direction, Anderson said. The company’s co-founder and executive director, Elizabeth Reed, recently announced her retirement, effective June 30 sansha demi pointe shoes. And Anderson, a former member of the New York City Ballet, said he has long wanted to pursue other artistic and choreographic projects and collaborations without being tied to specific seasonal dates or venues..

“We’re revising and changing, we’re not ending anything,” Anderson said. “We hope people will come along with us sansha demi pointe shoes. I’m extremely proud of our dancers and the works we’ve put up. I think we’ve built up enough trust for 12 years that people will support these new ventures.”. In a news release, Reed said her retirement “has been a difficult and long-contemplated decision.” Anderson added that he, the company’s board of directors and artistic collaborators, believe that a project-based model makes sense for the company. “This will allow me, the board of directors, our artists and collaborators the greatest flexibility in creating offerings that are artistically satisfying and serve our audiences while maintaining the standards we have established in 12 years of successful operations.”..

The sensation of great distances, of distinct levels of altitude and degrees of light — it was extraordinary, and the result was a dramatic journey across the concerto’s four movements, which last close to half an hour. It didn’t hurt that there was a brilliant soloist aboard for this musical aerial show: Anthony Marwood, a violinist who dispatches any challenge with sturdy elegance and seductive tone. And then there was the Berkeley Symphony, which commissioned this work and performed it with keen focus under the leadership of its music director and conductor Joana Carneiro pointe shoes online.

Samuel Adams — and if you’ve been living under a rock, he is the son of composer John Adams — grew up in Berkeley, studied at Stanford and Yale, moved to Brooklyn and recently returned to Oakland pointe shoes online. He is 28 and (following “Drift and Providence” for the San Francisco Symphony and String Quartet in Five Movements for the St. Lawrence String Quartet) this is his third major piece to be performed locally in not much more than a year. (You can hear more of his music — shorter works for less elaborate ensembles — in the coming days and weeks from Mobius Trio and Diablo Ballet.)..

He is emerging as a composer to be trusted. He has a voice. His scoring is confident, elegant, dappled with detail and generally characterized by understatement and intimacy pointe shoes online. There is a dreaminess of mood and a sense that shadows aren’t very far away. For instance, in the Violin Concerto, what are those faraway plumes of color and smoke that we keep hearing and seeing (or so it seemed Thursday) down there on the ground? Explosions? Cannon fire? Fireworks? Mind musings?. Don’t get me wrong; this isn’t some soundtrack. It’s closer to a symphonic tone poem, in that it is continually evocative. Or one can simply experience it as music that grips, that commands the ear to follow..

Composed in “two acts,” each containing two connected movements, the concerto begins on a short pastoral note among the strings, like an echo of Copland. The action quickly moves out and up to the solo violinist, who is given a series of cadenzas — lyric, long-noted and ribbony, with a modicum of double-stops and trick moves, all of it sounding easy under Marwood’s fingers and bow. These cadenzas keep emerging, briefly, as the violin moves in and out of the greater orchestral flow, here mimicked by piccolos, or there riding high above some new swing rhythm (Adams has worked as a jazz bassist) as one of the percussionists picks up a set of brushes pointe shoes online.

The third movement (titled “aria: patiently waiting for the past to come”) is composed of fragments of a Baroque ritornello form, the composer explains in his program notes. These are some of the work’s most arresting passages: The theme stretches out ever so slowly and sensuously, as the textures become vaporous and as eerie overtones are coaxed from metal bowls in the percussion section. In the concerto’s final moments, the orchestra begins to blush with color, as if fragile blossoms are about to open pointe shoes online. Here Adams toys with one of his father’s radiant moments of awakening, but he pulls back from the heat, and the piece thins and gradually dissolves, perhaps taking two or three minutes more than needed to do so. But the concerto ends with great effect — like a pop tune on a cloud, a fabulous descending chord sequence passes the solo violin as it ascends on open strings and at last vanishes into nothingness..

Next up for Walters is her return to “Little Shop.” The rock musical, based on Roger Corman’s cult favorite 1960 comedy/horror flick, tells the story of a meek clerk in a skid-row flower shop. He suddenly creates a sensation when he discovers an exotic plant with a most unusual appetite. In 1982, it was adapted for the stage by lyricist Howard Ashman and composer Alan Menken, launching their careers. A long-running off-Broadway smash, it was nominated for a Tony when it was staged on Broadway in 2003. A movie version was released in 1986 ballet shoes for anna.

“Having played Chiffon,” Walters says, “I find myself humming along with the urchins. But it’s wonderful to be playing Audrey, usually on melody, which is a nice break from the weird, dissonant harmonies. “Playing Audrey, with how positive her outlook is, you’re embodying this character that really does try to see the good in everything. A lot of times, it’s detrimental to her, which is why she’s with this abusive boyfriend ballet shoes for anna. But she does try to see beyond the darkness, see the light through it all.”..

Though it’s Walters’ first time performing at Foothill, she has worked with director Milissa Carey, musical director Dolores Duran-Cefalu and choreographer Amanda Folena before. “All of them are just wonderful to work with,” Walters says, “so I’m I’m thrilled to be part of this production.”. Beyond the bizarre, “Little Shop” offers relatable characters and relationships ballet shoes for anna. Walters says, “Everyone has some sort of love story that’s both tragic and beautiful — at the same time, usually.”..

The performing arts reached out to Walters during childhood. “My mom raised me on musicals and Motown music. My parents took me to see live theater at a very young age.”. It was a Mommy and Me dance class that made performing Walters’ great passion. “I was, like, 4. The mothers are with the children, so you get the independence of learning something, but the comfort of having Mom still there. I was a very, very shy kid. And theater gave me a platform to step out of being shy and into a character. It gave me a boost of confidence. I just loved performing ballet shoes for anna.

“In kindergarten, they give you a blank slate and you have to color in what you want to be when you grow up. I drew a girl with ballet shoes on, but also an easel and paintbrush, as well as the comedy/tragedy masks. It was obvious I was going into the arts,” Walter says, laughing. The focus was dance at the beginning. But at 5, Walters participated in summer drama camp. She was also involved in competitive horseback riding, gymnastics and circus arts. She played piano, viola and drums ballet shoes for anna. Theater took center stage when she turned 8, the minimum performing age for the Palo Alto Children’s Theatre..

Norwegian dancemaker Jo Stromgren’s local premiere of “Necessity Again” was the night’s wryly surreal romp in philosophical terrain. A voice-over by French philosopher Jacques Derrida discussed presence, necessity and death, as a troupe of bee-hived, suited youth dragged and strung up lines from which blank paper hung. Meanwhile, French crooner Charles Aznavour sang about love, loss, the beach, and muscadet. It might have been titled “Against Necessity,” because with no intellectual pretensions but gobs of off-kilter wit, it refused to be a dance we had to recognize, while every element in it was recognizable. Blank paper — metaphor for empty words, the unknowable, the effluvium of our efforts to understand —— was the main character, the dancers life’s pawns red dance shoes. Sex and instinct, including the hilarious vibrations that seized Matthew Rich’s pelvis like a force from outer space, snaked through everything..

Through everything, too, Jim French’s lighting met the dances as a partner, especially in what I thought of as the beach scene, where dancers down to their underwear combed the scattered paper for messages while cast in a gorgeous, Picasso-rose light. Launched in 2003 with funds from philanthropist Nancy Laurie, Wal-Mart founder Sam Walton’s niece, Cedar Lake has been in administrative turmoil lately. Artistically, however, this seems to be a company that dares to have something to say and even invites a woman to be among those who say it red dance shoes. Long may it last..

McIntrye was already a major force in contemporary dance through his long tenure with Houston Ballet when he founded the Trey McIntrye Project in 2005. Initially conceived as a summer touring project, TMP became a full-time outfit in 2008 when the company relocated to Boise, Idaho, a risky and closely watched move that turned into a model of collaboration between a culture-hungry city and an artist unafraid of the unbeaten path. But no matter where you are running it, a dance company is no plié in the park, and McIntyre has too many other interests to focus exclusively on that Sisyphean task. He recently announced that he’s ramping down TMP as a full-time company following the tour that brings it back to Zellerbach Hall March 21-22 for a Cal Performances engagement red dance shoes. For McIntyre, he’s not losing a company; he’s gaining a world pregnant with possibilities..

“I’ve never been drawn to dance as a medium,” he said in a recent phone conversation from the TMP studio in Boise red dance shoes. “For me, the point is not about dance. I had great fortune to develop in this language, but there’s a real craving to explore others. We’re paring down to a staff of two or three. It’ll take discipline to scale back, because it’s been incredibly ambitious, and as new opportunities arise, we jump on them. After the tour, there’ll be an incubation period where ideas develop on a smaller scale.”..

McIntyre is making the transition in style. He presents two West Coast premieres at Zellerbach, including the ambitious “Mercury Half-Life,” a 50-minute work set to the music of Queen that explores the life of the British rock band’s late lead singer Freddie Mercury. The other piece on the program is the Cal Performances co-commission “The Vinegar Works: Four Dances of Moral Instruction.” Inspired by the work of illustrator and writer Edward Gorey, whose dark and playfully gothic vision is a major inspiration to the steampunk movement and annual Edwardian Ball events held in San Francisco and Los Angeles, “The Vinegar Works” is set to Shostakovich’s Piano Quintet in G minor and features puppets created by Michael Curry (known for his masks for the Broadway production of “The Lion King”) red dance shoes.

As the title suggests, intense moods prevail in the trio of works that will be presented. The program’s highlight is Czech choreographer Jiří Kylián’s Return to a Strange Land, a piece for six dancers with a most painful background. Kylián conceived Return nearly four decades ago as a tribute to his mentor, Stuttgart Ballet director John Cranko, who died suddenly on a company flight home to Germany from America. Return is set to early 20th-century piano solos from a song cycle by composer Leoš Janáček, a fellow Czech who created the melancholy tunes to mourn the passing of his own daughter buy shellac for pointe shoes.

The Bay Area premiere of Return took place last October with Smuin, which knows firsthand the devastation of unexpected loss. Founder Michael Smuin died of a heart attack in 2007 while teaching a company class. XXtremes’ sunny side is represented by Dear Miss Cline, a 2011 work by Amy Seiwert, choreographer in residence and a former Smuin dancer buy shellac for pointe shoes. The romping salute to country music pioneer Patsy Cline includes 10 of her classics, including “Walkin’ After Midnight,” “Come On In” and “She’s Got You.”..

Last on the program is Smuin’s Carmina Burana, set to Carl Orff’s same-named cantata buy shellac for pointe shoes. The work, which ends with the rip-roaring “O Fortuna,” is a celebration of life, lust and joy at the same time that it “mourns the cruelty of fate.” It’s a fitting coda to XXtremes and a showcase for the company, which has always embraced bold expressiveness and fearlessness. Celia Fushille, Smuin’s artistic and executive director–and onetime principal dancer–is merely carrying on a proud tradition..

“Sky: A National Juried Exhibition” has transformed the Bedford Gallery into a place of dreams and daring expression on display through May 25 pink ballet shoes. Eighty-seven artists selected by jurors DeWitt Cheng, a San Francisco-based writer and critic, and Elizabeth Ferrer, director of contemporary art at BRIC in Brooklyn, provide 87 different answers to the question: What is sky?. Even before Vincent van Gogh swirled the starry night into a richly textured stew and Ansel Adams captured thunderous storm clouds descending upon Yosemite Valley, the vast, mercurial nature of Earth’s upper atmosphere has transfixed humans..

Myths, poetry, literature, symphonies, ballets, hurricanes, meteorites, space pioneers and colossal wars have all played out various scenarios of fury and finery — inspired by the possibility of open air pink ballet shoes. Locally, 20th century California plein air painters like William Keith and Marion Kavanaugh Wachtel demonstrated their affinity for the state’s grand, coastal and rural settings where cerulean skies contrast rugged rock. The contemporary artists included in the gallery’s exhibit are no less commanding. From sprawling aerial oceans of expected blue to densely etched and blackened domes to lollypop-colored polka dots immersed in bubbles, “the sky’s the limit” climbs from cliché to concise description of the works’ range..

Happily, “Sky” includes a substantial number of artists who live and work in the East Bay, offering a welcome opportunity to view local talent that won’t disappear when the show closes. Bea Guttman of Walnut Creek works in layers that suggest both fire and ice in her painting “Dusk.” Gutman said the piece was inspired by a trip to the Oregon coast. El Cerrito artist Ellen Yamada Tzvetin’s monotype prints resonate with mystery and mist. Spectacular black shards thrust into textured gray fields and there’s a tumbling, which-end-is-up affect to the perspectives pink ballet shoes. “Inviting or threatening, soundless or thundering, the sky is an endless source of inspiration,” she wrote in an email..

Kat Mulkey of Lafayette referred in an interview to the Earth as “this rock we stand on.” Her “Black Holes Are Real” photograph proves the firmness of aerial images pink ballet shoes. Photography, she said, is “instinctively a trusted and factual medium.”. Acknowledging the age of Photoshop might mean viewers are skeptical about the medium’s authenticity, she asserted there are as many visions of sky as there are viewers and creators. Looking at the work of her peers, she said, “I felt the community of ‘Sky.’ I can’t wait to see what the other folks come up with.”..

Elizabeth Williams, a Berkeley-based photographer, correlated the serendipity of her photographic discoveries with the sky’s rich, ever-fluctuating and dynamic canvas. “Purposefully enigmatic, my images are intended to elicit and prolong a state of not knowing,” she said. Some images are ambiguous: the collision of clouds and blue tones as a building mural of painted sky merges with actual sky in “Oakland, 2011.” What is real?. A large thundercloud propelled Peter McNeil of Walnut Creek well beyond the fluid paints he used to capture the moment. A slim footbed of golden grass gives rise to a towering, purple-gray cloud in the painting at the Bedford. McNeil’s imagination is no less mountainous. Suggesting the sky is benevolent, creature-filled, an indicator of time and season, and more, he said the theme — and art’s capacity for exploration — is endless pink ballet shoes.
