Now Dugan’s transports the audience via her company’s production of “Nutcracker.” “My goal is for the audience to sit there, enjoy it and feel like they’re in a different time period, as well as a different place, unlike any other. And to also feel inspired somehow by the dancers, by what is coming out of these local dancers’ hearts and souls. That’s really important to me gabellini dance shoes. “I am sometimes dismayed when I see large companies, where the dancers are so talented, but somehow, the direction coming from the top is not wanting those dancers to truly express something that is more internal. That bothers me very much. The artistry should never be less important than the physicality of the movement. Sometimes now, in ballet, the focus is on just the innate physical body — super high extension, super great arched feet — and the artistry is completely secondary. Audience members just want to be moved, by seeing something inspirational. And that comes more from an artistic sensibility. The dancer has to have that. But sometimes the training and direction is not supporting that process of really creating a true artist-dancer.”..

Dugan studied at Sacramento Ballet, Boston Ballet, Pacific Northwest Ballet and San Francisco Ballet gabellini dance shoes. After high school, she danced professionally with American Festival Ballet. She then attended Stanford University, where she earned a BA in economics and an MA in dance education. In 1993, while a student there, Dugan founded Cardinal Ballet, Stanford’s first ballet company. In 1999, she opened the American Academy of Ballet. “That was something I always had in mind to do, even when I was a professional dancer, because I felt, a lot of times, the environment was not as healthy as it could be. I’d always wanted to make a change in dance and do it in a healthier way, both with the training methods, as well as the whole psychological, spiritual aspect of it, so that people are mentored and supported as they become artists..

“I want to draw out whatever is in each student, the potential for them to shine and to reveal who they are through dance. Regardless of the innate talent that’s there, if you can teach it correctly, everyone can shine in their own way gabellini dance shoes. And that’s our focus, to try to pull that out of each student. “Some kids come in and they’re natural performers. Others, they’re shy or they lack self-confidence. So it’s a more interesting challenge. But that part is very exciting, because, for me, dance is much more about the life journey versus just, ‘I’m going to go to class and become a dancer tomorrow.’ There’s a journey involved.”..

Valuable lessons await Dugan’s students. “For example, in ‘Nutcracker,’ there are different roles kids want to achieve. Then there’s disappointment that comes sometimes, when they don’t get it and they see their friend get the part. But then we try to talk them through that and just say, ‘Hang on, keep working toward your goal.’ And often they will. And they will end up achieving a goal that they wanted gabellini dance shoes. That’s something that is very, very important for kids to understand. The work ethic has to be there. You pour your heart into it and often that will pay off.”..

Dugan’s own three children, ages 3, 8 and 12, have experienced the fun of dance. “The youngest, Joya, is taking pre-ballet classes and dancing around the house all the time. Jacqueline, our middle one, will be one of the dancing children in ‘The Nutcracker.’ The oldest, Jacob, who plays football and wrestles, might play the Nutcracker Prince. “I wanted him to be comfortable in his body, so I encouraged him strongly to take dance classes. One of his principals last year at Redeemer Lutheran School, Mr. (Michael) Mancini, had been a kicker for the 49ers. He said he had taken ballet and it had really improved his flexibility, which helped him be a better punter. And he said it right in front of my son gabellini dance shoes. I just had this big smile,” Dugan says, laughing..

For starters, one young woman will wind up as the human topper on a Christmas tree, a feat that requires her to balance upside-down, single-armed, 15 feet in the air–with no safety features sansha pointe shoes reviews. Other specialties include a unicyclist on a wire, a balance act on bottles and people throwing bowls at each other. There’s a lion dance, too. Even with the familiar Tchaikovsky score, this is not your mother’s Nutcracker. “This one is all Chinese,” Nahat explains. “The bowl throwers are for the Russian dance [during the Land of Sweets act], the Arabian dance is done by a contortionist holding candles on her feet. There’s a panda bear and, instead of mice, ninja warriors fight the Terracotta Prince.” OK, ninjas are Japanese, but it all still sounds pretty fabulous..

Despite all the snafus involved and running around he’s done, it’s clear Nahat–who spent about two weeks in China every month for a year creating both Yulan and Terracotta–will keep staging razzle-dazzle shows like this because it’s what he loves to do. Fortunately, generous sponsors such as the Karen and Walter Loewenstern Family Trust, Pamela and David Packard, and Charmaine and Dan Warmenhoven help keep his visions afloat sansha pointe shoes reviews. But he’s especially doing this for his youngest fans..

This is the 21st anniversary of the company’s Nutcracker tour, which features 40 artists from Russia, the Tchaikovsky score plus a few touches unique to this staging. Masha is the name of the heroine, for instance, instead of the usual Clara or Marie. Likewise, there is no Land of Sweets. Here it is known as the Land of Peace and Harmony, where all creatures live in perfect accord with each other. The Sugar Plum Fairy becomes the Dove of Peace, but not just any harmonious bird sansha pointe shoes reviews. It takes two dancers to become the fantasy fowl, which boasts a 20-foot wingspan. Other visual treats include an iconic Moscow skyline and a pair of 6-foot Matryoshka nesting dolls..

Traditionalists needn’t worry, though; dancers from around the world–Spanish, Chinese, Arabian, etc.–still welcome Masha and her transformed prince in glorious set pieces sansha pointe shoes reviews. And, of course, the girl and her swain still perform their grand pas de deux. There’s a local angle as well: In October, Moscow Ballet held open auditions at Los Gatos High School for young dancers to appear in this Nutcracker. Sixty lucky kids, ages 7 to 16, were selected for an opportunity that will give their families bragging rights for years to come. Besides performing in the party scene, the girls and boys will take on the roles of mice, snowflakes, angels and others..

Local Author Day: Eight Los Gatos authors–Betty Auchard, Shauley Cheng, Anthony J. Cirone, Erica Goss, Victoria M. Johnson, Jana McBurney-Lin, Barry Minkin and Steve Sporleder–will present their work. Dec. 3, 11:30 a.m. Los Gatos Library, 100 Villa Ave., Los Gatos. History Club of Los Gatos Open House: Learn more about volunteering and rental opportunities. Dec sansha pointe shoes reviews. 7, noon-3 p.m. History Club of Los Gatos, 123 Los Gatos Blvd., Los Gatos.

One such young dancer is 13-year-old Mai Corkins. The Alameda resident has been dancing since the age of 4. “I began as a snowball and, the next year, I was a soldier, and, this year, I’m a rat,” Corkins said. “I think I loved being a snowball the best, but the rat is also fun. It’s just a challenge dancing in the big head.”. Also finding the head a problem is 10-year-old Katharine Pope, who plays a mouse in this year’s production. The student at Montclair Elementary School said: “It’s kind of hard to see, especially when you’re jumping around, and it’s pretty hot ballet shoes characters. But, I love being on stage. It’s very exciting.”..

Orinda’s Julia Milani is also a veteran performer in “The Nutcracker.” The 14-year-old student at Head-Royce School has performed as a snowball, a bonbon and a soldier. “I love performing in the show with the professional dancers,” she said. “Rehearsals are really tiring, but it’s so much fun when we get on stage in front of an audience.” ballet shoes characters. Lustig believes in integrating the young dancers with the professional dancers. “Using both our professional company and the children together gives a very full, more textured picture that along with the beautiful costumes and the gorgeous music played by the symphony, brings it to a higher dimension of art,” he said..

The artistic director also noted the sense of mentorship that has developed between the company dancers and the children. “Here you have these young dancers trying on point shoes, tiaras and tutus with such excitement, and it reminds the professional dancers of their own debut with this show when they were 8 or 10 years old,” he said. Lustig also feels the interaction gives the young dancers a real sense of what the profession demands. “I think that is a very healthy thing, because while dancing is a joyous thing to do, there is a lot of hard work involved,” he said. “It is also very gratifying for me to watch these young people grasp the challenging choreography and take the stage in a very professional manner.” ballet shoes characters.

There’s the 24/7 work schedule, replacing the fairy tale of 9-to-5; there’s a hypervigilant society, bent on turning 9-year-olds into professional ball players and ballet dancers; there’s a DIY culture, implying everyone should know how to compost, remodel, do car repair and build solar-powered everything, all while training for a triathlon and raising 2.7 kids. Un Kwon and Chris Casado lived that life. The San Francisco couple worked in high-tech finance and kept a fast pace with their young son. Until 2009, when they moved their operation to Orinda how to dye pointe shoes with rit dye. Kwon, pregnant with their second child, held late-night, new-mom phone conversations with a college buddy, personal chef (and also new mom) Karen Eddy. They commiserated over the sorry state of family dinners until one night, their commingled angst produced an idea — to create a company offering affordable, reliable, personal shopping based on healthy, easy-to-prepare menus and delivering the groceries straight to the doorsteps of local homes. Chop, Chop, Go! is the culmination of a two-year, entrepreneurial push. With Casado managing website and delivery logistics and working with Whole Foods Market, Eddy creating weekly menus, Heather MacKenzie supplying marketing expertise, and Kwon testing recipes, recruiting clients and adding the vital, personal touch, the meal-planning/grocery-shopping service company launched during the summer of 2012..

“Originally, we had a huge database of recipes from bloggers,” Kwon says, in an interview earlier this year. “It was too busy and overambitious. Recipes had 20 ingredients and were a nightmare to prepare.”. The menus have since been honed to simplicity, mixing and matching recipes so customers aren’t left with a bucket of parsley or forced to toss out exotic, one-and-done ingredients at week’s end how to dye pointe shoes with rit dye. “That’s the beauty of bringing high-tech to an old-time idea,” Kwon says. “We were able to eliminate inefficiency and redirect the platform to what customers wanted — something easy and something they could trust.”..

For now, Chop Chop Go! serves central Contra Costa, from Danville north to Pleasant Hill.; Kwon says expansion to more cities in the East Bay is “on our radar.” how to dye pointe shoes with rit dye. Customers getting started choose delivery options ($5 store-pickup or $15 home delivery, plus the cost of groceries); build a grocery list (either on the website, by texting, or the old-fashioned way: write it and send a picture); and indicate organic or conventional preferences before finalizing their order. Prime members gain access to the $5-per-month meal plan (also a standalone option); paying $45 for the menus and five home-delivered orders per month..

The ordering process is designed to take less than two minutes how to dye pointe shoes with rit dye. Kwon says early adopters respond to the next-day morning or afternoon/evening delivery options and the service is appealing to a 60-40 gender split. “The dads sometimes seem the most interested,” Casado says. Unfamiliar with cooking techniques, dinner becomes a chore or a pressure cooker waiting to explode. “People become better cooks and relax — I’ve learned there’s a rhythm to Eddy’s recipes,” Kwon says..

If you’re one of the many people who made a New Year’s resolution to up the ante on your health and fitness, take a look below at what experts believe will be 2014’s biggest fitness trends in the Los Angeles area. From virtual personal trainers to a new variation of SUP Yoga, these trends could help you in whatever fitness resolutions you take on. A NEW VARIATION OF SUP YOGA. Stand-Up Paddleboard (SUP) Yoga may have been a popular fitness trend in 2013, but this year you won’t have to get into the water to get the same kind of workout how to sew criss cross elastic on pointe shoes. The Indo Yoga Board, developed by Hunter Joslin, is a 6-foot-long board on four rockers that provides the same instability as SUP Yoga, requiring you to engage your muscles even more than traditional yoga in order to keep your balance..

With classes already on the East Coast, Indo Yoga Board is making its debut in Los Angeles this month with a class at Yoga Loft in Manhattan Beach. Or you can purchase the board for home use for about $375. SurfSet Boards are slightly different than Indo Yoga Boards but the concept is the same. Classes are offered at a variety of locations throughout the Los Angeles area, including SURFSET LA in Hermosa Beach, 220 Fit in Santa Monica, and a variety of Crunch gyms how to sew criss cross elastic on pointe shoes. Donna Cyrus, senior vice president of programming for Crunch, says they were the first to have the program and confirms it’s becoming incredibly popular. “It’s going to pop up everywhere pretty soon,” she says..

High-intensity interval training continues to be a popular exercise method this year how to sew criss cross elastic on pointe shoes. H.I.I.T. sessions can last four to 30 minutes with short, intense bursts of cardio followed by a period of recovery. In October, the American College of Sports Medicine said H.I.I.T.would be 2014’s top fitness trends. The P90X and Insanity workouts, which were popular the last couple years, are good examples of this form of exercise. Christine Bullock, a Los Angeles fitness, nutrition and wellness expert whose DVD “10 Minute Solution: Butt Lift” was released in 2013, says H.I.I.T. is popular because people’s busy lifestyles leave them wanting a quick but effective workout..

Cyrus agrees — many of Crunch’s classes are now this style of workout — citing the popularity of CrossFit has made an impact on programming for gyms and personal trainers. She also notes a popular H.I.I.T how to sew criss cross elastic on pointe shoes. workout is Jillian Michael’s 3-2-1 interval system, which is a 24-minute workout mixing two minutes of strength, two minutes of cardio and one minute of abs. COMBO CLASSES. Both Cyrus and Bullock were quick to mention the trend of combo classes, where 60-minute classes are divided into two different styles of workout. Sitting around a table with friends, the Walnut Creek father of two realized that the conversation revolved around their children’s activities — how hard it was to schedule them, the difficulties in getting them to and from an event, where to get good recommendations for unique family outings and similar issues. “It suddenly became clear to me that there was a need to make this easier, that maybe there was a business there,” said Kaplan, a veteran business consultant. “It seemed like a dream to have everything in the same place, but then we realized, ‘Why not solve the problem for ourselves?’ “ gamba ballet shoes.
