Draeger’s Market, with locations in Los Altos, Menlo Park, San Mateo and Danville, landed a twofer: “Best Market for Meat and Poultry” and “Best Local Food Market.”. Vice President Tony Draeger said that a “commitment to quality products and the best service” is what helps the stores shine repetto ballet slippers. First-timers and regulars alike enjoy the chain’s “time-honored” recipes — for German potato salad, beef stew and more — that have been handed down from one Draeger generation to the next..

According to Draeger, customers prefer to purchase organic and locally produced goods because “local businesses and farmers are part of our community and they tend to support local organizations and charities that are also part of the community. Also, it’s better for the environment because there’s less money spent on transportation, and local people tend to have more interest in sustainable farming methods.” repetto ballet slippers. Being considered a fan favorite is important because it “energizes and incentivizes” the roughly 375 people who work for the market chain, Draeger said..

Natalie Richardson, owner of LuLu’s, which won the “Best Mexican Food” category for the second time, puts a similar emphasis on “natural, organic and sustainably raised” ingredients. “The reality is that we live in an area with an abundance of opportunities to eat Mexican food,” she noted. “What sets us apart is [that] our food is fresh. Every salsa, every chip, every fruit drink is made from scratch daily.” repetto ballet slippers. After debuting in Menlo Park in 2005, LuLu’s has expanded to Palo Alto, San Carlos and Los Altos and currently serves 1,200 diners a day among all four restaurants. However, Richardson has learned over the years that it is imperative to have “very thick skin” when striving to be successful in the restaurant business..

“While most of the time it is well intended, just about everybody is an expert food critic,” Richardson said. “This leads to continual advice about what we can do better or what we did wrong. Sometimes, it makes you wonder if the effort is worthwhile.”. But then something like the People’s Choice Award comes along and leaves her “speechless” by reaffirming that her team’s efforts are on point, Richardson said. “I can’t tell you how much I love it when I see our customers, not at the restaurants, but at the gas station, grocery store [and elsewhere], and they stop to say how much they love LuLu’s,” she said repetto ballet slippers. “Receiving this award from The Daily News made my day and year.”..

The first to return to the States was Estelle’s US-born father. In 1938 her mother returned. In 1939, with the Japanese occupying most of Coastal China, the sisters were put alone on a ship to San Francisco. The ride was 28 days of seasickness target dance shoes. “I was nine,” Kelley recalled. “I only spoke Cantonese.”. By the time the girls arrived, both parents had remarried. Kelley was farmed out to relatives. “I went from one aunt’s house to the next,” Kelley said. “For two years, I followed my cousins to St. Mary’s School in Chinatown. But I never knew where I was going to sleep at night, if I would have a roof over my head or food.”..

Child Welfare stepped in. Kelley was placed in Oakland’s Ming Quong Orphanage. At age 15, the orphanage found Kelley work as a domestic servant target dance shoes. She had aged out. She took care of two children. She did the family’s cooking and cleaning. She also attended Oakland Technical High School. (Clint Eastwood was a classmate.) She really enjoyed taking drama, singing and dancing. A teacher strongly encouraged her to consider a career in theater. But for the domestic servant that was an impossible dream. At 18 she married..

“Two months later the marriage was annulled,” Kelley said. “It turns out he was already married.”. Right after the annulment, Kelley discovered she was pregnant. She gave birth to a “beautiful” daughter. As a single parent, Kelley sang and danced at Chinatown’s famous Forbidden City. “It was a hard job and I was very fortunate,” Kelley said. “So many things could have happened but didn’t. There were really unpleasant people who were producers and directors. But it was also a good job. I didn’t work during the day and I was able to bring my daughter with me at night and keep her safely backstage target dance shoes.

Kelley married her second husband seven years later. But there were problems in the marriage and it ended in divorce. From that marriage came Kelley’s “beautiful” son. “There were rough times, but each night I said, ‘tomorrow will be better,’” Kelley recalled. “And my children grew up and they are wonderful people. My daughter is a nurse and my son is a lawyer. When I married again, my husband Bob Kelley made all my dreams come true target dance shoes. We have been married 37 years.”..

So she established Dog Days to do just that. In the 20 years since, the Woodside-based business has become a go-to for clients from San Jose to Burlingame sansha ballroom dance shoes. Dogs are trained on weeknights and weekends in Atherton and Portola Valley and private lessons are scheduled at people’s homes. Staff works with therapy dogs, helps people with dog and breed selection, and trains shy and nervous pets to become confident, Halperin said. Dog Days won first place in The Daily News’ annual People’s Choice Award for “Best Dog Daycare” for the second straight year and has earned the “Best Dog Trainer” honor for three years running..

Halperin, whose business card promises “interspecies communication” and “canine as a second language,” was jubilant. Dogs should be viewed as “an asset to society, not an imposition,” she stressed, adding, “The award is recognition for the dedication and hard work we put into helping people with their dogs.”. Cindy Ginanni, director of Dance Connection, was equally thrilled to learn that her Palo Alto business, which specializes in ballet, tap, jazz and hip-hop, was crowned “Best Dance Studio.” sansha ballroom dance shoes.

Her 18 teachers offer a “really positive and friendly environment” to roughly 700 students and Dance Connection is a “second home for many” of them, Ginanni said. The longtime dancer, who also has a background in early childhood development, recalled being pregnant with her third child in 1987 and in need of additional income. While teaching at a local studio, Ginanni began dance instruction at a nearby day care and it “exploded,” she said sansha ballroom dance shoes. Fast forward two-plus decades and Ginanni today welcomes dancers in preschool, guides them through middle and high school, then bids them farewell as they head to college. It’s immensely “rewarding” to work with budding “second-generation” dancers — children of her former pupils, she added..

Other Peninsula establishments that voters selected as their top choices include LYFE Kitchen as the “Best Healthy Eats Restaurant,” Curry Up Now as the “Best Indian Restaurant,” Sancho’s Taqueria as the “Best Burrito” and Prolific Oven as the “Best Bakery.” Left Bank and Bistro Vida tied for the “Best French Restaurant.” sansha ballroom dance shoes. In addition, TheatreWorks was deemed the “Best Live Theater,” Stanford the “Best Hospital,” Kepler’s Books the “Best Local Book Store,” Juut Salonspa the “Best Beauty/Hair Salon,” Massage Therapy Center the “Best Massage,” and Gleim The Jeweler the “Best Jewelry Store.”..

“Being detail-oriented and being a creature of habit is really essential in this line of work. Consistency is key and every flight is a little bit different,” she said. “Sometimes I’ll come out of the barrel and I’ll realize, ‘I’ve got a little more rotation than is ideal’ and I have to decide in a split second how am I going to stop my rotation so I don’t over rotate.”. “What’s so brilliant about Jerome Robbins is that he emulated in dance what he was experiencing,” Neal says. “He was tapping into the world around him and able to express it with a melding of dance forms.”. Neal spent nearly two decades as a principal dancer with the New York City Ballet, retiring in 2010 with a final program of Balanchine choreography. Among his many endeavors these days: He stages work for both The George Balanchine Trust and The Robbins Rights Trust, for which he’s restaged “Fancy Free” with ballet companies around the country pointe shoes brands for flat feet.

“The dance was so new and innovative,” Neal says. “To this day, every ballet company performs ‘Fancy Free’ over and over again. What makes it so extraordinary and timeless is a language that goes beyond steps pointe shoes brands for flat feet. It’s crafted like a Broadway show, with all these reactions between dancers that are very specific to Jerome Robbins.”. Neal danced for Robbins for more than a decade, right up until the choreographer’s death at the age of 79 in 1998. While he performed in many of the choreographer’s signature works for NYCB, he never actually performed “Fancy Free” (“When he got a cast that he liked, he’d stick with it,” Neal says). But he rehearsed “Fancy Free” with Robbins for years, absorbing the choreographer’s dramatic vision for the dance..

“Robbins wanted to broadcast to the rafters, and other times he’d want us look at each other, not even out at the audience, and ask us to create an internal subtext,” Neal recalls. “When I first learned ‘Fancy Free,’ he’d put together a cast and tell us to go out drinking, get into trouble and come back and use that.” pointe shoes brands for flat feet. Neal hasn’t assigned any carousing to the Ballet San Jose dancers, but he’s passing on some of the insights he gleaned directly from Robbins. In much the same way, Tharp veteran Shelley Washington brings her experience to the company’s restaging of “In the Upper Room,” though, in her case, she was there at the creation..

Tharp’s Broadway production of “Singin’ In the Rain” had just closed in 1985, when she created a new company, combining some of her longtime modern dancers, such as Washington, and a classically trained contingent. “In the Upper Room,” which is set to music by Philip Glass, is a supremely athletic piece built upon two distinct factions, one wearing sneakers (“stompers”) and one in pointe shoes (“bombers”), with one female dancer mediating between the two groups pointe shoes brands for flat feet.

“Some of the movement had come from a prior piece that was never performed, and some was brand-new,” Washington says. “We’d been doing a lot of yoga, so there’s a lot of down dog. I’ve been telling the Ballet San Jose dancers that it’s really a group work, and, like a marathon, passing the baton, you’re only as good as the group before and after you. They get it, and there’s a lot of great company spirit here pointe shoes brands for flat feet. It’s great to pass it on, but I can’t believe it’s coming up on 30 years since ‘Upper Room’ premiered.”..
