This lack of specificity undermines the emotional intensity of the production, which doesn’t quite earn its tearful final tableau. Still it’s quite stimulating to have to listen hard and look closely from start to finish. You can’t make out everything Billy says and not all of the sign language is translated into subtitles. The Concord-based Bay Area Crisis Nursery has been in operation for 33 years: “with no federal, state or county money,” she boasted. Pleasant Hill resident Betty Geishirt Cantrell’s SparkPoint Contra Costa, with operations in Richmond and Bay Point, merged 17 service organizations to provide free financial empowerment support to women. “Great things happen when people work together. Poverty is out here in the suburbs. Join us,” she said fitflop ballet flats. Walnut Creek’s Diablo Ballet artistic director Lauren Jonas, and Linda Fodrini-Johnson, founder and executive director of Eldercare Services, attack their vocations with energy. The ballet company adopts three schools in underserved communities for its PEEK outreach program..

Asked by a student, “Are you rich?” Jonas said she was rich with passion fitflop ballet flats. “I have dance — and making it into something that will inspire you,” she said she had told the someday dancer. Fodrini-Johnson said a good leader ignites and guides passion. “Start Something,” a song she kept in mind while building her company from a one-woman-in-a-home to a 250-employee operation, was coupled with her advice to “be generous and empower others.”. The eight women were honored at the recent “Bridge to Equality” dinner at the Crowne Plaza in Concord..

The Contra Costa Commission for Women, originating in 1997, was formed as a change agent fitflop ballet flats. Educating and advising the community about social and economic conditions impacting women through conferences, public forums and advocacy, the biannual Hall of Fame awards recognize “unsung heroes,” said event co-chair Nancie Zimmerman. Nominations in seven categories (environment, arts, community, leadership, justice, health care, science/technology) are judged by women who reside outside of the county’s parameters. Zimmerman said her only regret about this year’s program was the lack of nominations in environment and science/technology..

“That’s something we’re definitely going to change next year,” she vowed. Keynote speaker and California Secretary of State Debra Bowen told the audience that her “gateway drug” into public service was serving on Neighborhood Watch. Inspired by lessons from history, like negative, antiquated laws prohibiting women from owning property or denying them the right to vote — and positive examples, like her grandfather, from whom she learned to evaluate how things work, then attempt to fix them — Bowen said women and girls are “a force to be reckoned with.” Women’s work, she suggested, “is nothing more than changing the world.” fitflop ballet flats.

Bay Area Dance Week kicks off at noon Friday on Union Square with One Dance, a performance hosted by Rhythm & Motion Dance at which the public is invited to join in on iconic dance moves from the Charleston and the twist to the funky chicken and the moon walk (to see a tutorial on this year’s dance, or highlights of last year’s One Dance, go to www.mercurynews.com/entertainment.) fitflop ballet flats. At the age of 46, Carreno stepped for the first time into the role of the hapless Don Jose. It was a generous gift to the company and a tribute to his artistry. His finishes may not be what they once were but his exquisitely tight turns and his ability to make a role his own were glorious to see diy pointe shoes. Alexsandra Meijer’s splendid Carmen sported the shortest skirt and the longest legs in the universe. She used those legs like daggers, kicking, stabbing and raising them in triumph. In the bedroom scene with its infamously erotic, though no longer that shocking, duet, Meijer embodied plenty of Carmen’s self-satisfied narcissism but not enough of that louche man-eating quality..

The lovers’ final, bullfight-inspired duet was pure Petit theatricality. Attempting tragedy, it didn’t rise up to it. Ommi Pipit-Suksun and Rudy Candia will perform the leads on the Sunday matinee diy pointe shoes. As one the three bandit leaders, the still splendidly leaping Ramon Moreno — who together with Beth Ann Namey will retire at the end of the season — sported a comedian’s red wig. Strong woman Amy Marie Briones fired up her fouettés and sailed through her leaps; while Maykel Solas not only jumped and raced, he also somersaulted..

Tharp’s “In the Upper Room” got its name from a Mahalia Jackson gospel song. Despite Philip Glass’ including female voices toward the end of his commissioned score, I couldn’t see any trace of sacredness, unless racing through fog into some kind light suggests a search for something. “In the Upper Room” is an applause machine. One moment you have four women stalking and whirling in toe shoes, the next a leisurely group jogs backwards in slippers. The choreography’s demands on speed and precision partnering kept dancers on their toes and audiences at the edge of their seats diy pointe shoes. It was quite a ride..

At times it felt like a power keg about to explode. But it didn’t because Tharp meticulously shaped the supposed competition between ballet and modern dance into a friendly coexistence. Balletic turns and leaps — including a reverse fish dive, Solas’ whipping turns, and Meijer’s shoulder-high lifts — comfortably shared the stage with male shadow boxing and dancers shimmying and tapping. With Tharp the studio and the gym are one. “In the Upper Room ” does develop some kind of trajectory, enhanced by Norma Kamali’s splendid costuming diy pointe shoes. She starts the dancers in gray gym suits and black/white prison garbs. The ballet dancers gradually introduce the color red, most shockingly with the first bloody toe shoe. It made think of what is still one of the best ballet films, “The Red Shoes.”..

Ziesel, who led the cash-strapped troupe through a difficult period of restructuring, has managed the financial operations of the ballet for the last five years. Ziesel, who could not be reached for comment, oversaw the troupe through a turbulent stretch during which it dismissed its founding artistic director, Dennis Nahat, and reshuffled its board of directors. Ballet officials sang her praises but would not comment on the specifics behind this parting of the ways diy pointe shoes. “I have nothing but gratitude for Stephanie and all she has contributed to the ballet,” said board chairwoman Millicent Powers. “This is a small organization, and every single person counts for a lot. We wish her the best.”..

Today audiences expect Smuin dancers to be well versed in both classical and modern styles, and the diversity of the company’s programs is its trademark girls ballet slippers. Smuin Ballet is celebrating its 20th anniversary with an eclectic spring program at the Mountain View Center for the Performing Arts this month. Smuin Ballet has seen its fair share of bumpy roads over the years, economic climate aside. Smuin’s sudden death in 2007 shocked the dance community, and many expected the rebel’s ballet company to fold. While there are companies that continue on successfully after their founders’ deaths (Alvin Ailey, Joffrey, and New York City Ballet), it can be a real challenge, especially when the company relies on its founder’s choreography..

Fortunately for Smuin Ballet, Celia Fushille, Michael Smuin’s prima ballerina, muse, and eventually his associate director, took the reins as executive and artistic director. This might seem like an obvious move to the casual viewer, but a woman running a ballet company in this country is quite rare. “There are currently five female artistic directors in the U.S. leading ballet companies with a budget over $2.5 million,” says Fushille. “Only a few of us handle the executive director role as well.” Fushille has kept the company on track after the loss of its figurehead, and through the recession. She’s worked not only to preserve the late choreographer’s legacy, but also to bring to the Bay Area hot new works from acclaimed choreographers the world over, attracting the likes of Trey McIntyre, Ma Cong, and Helen Pickett girls ballet slippers.

Xxcentric, the final program of Smuin’s 20th anniversary season, is a tribute to its past and a heralding of its future. The program includes an homage to one of the great Broadway composers with an act from Michael Smuin’s Dancin’ with Gershwin, featuring recordings by Peter Gabriel, Sting, Marilyn Monroe, and more. “Nothing in my mind shouted ‘celebration!’ more than Gershwin,” says Fushille. Additionally, Fushille commissioned world premieres from two choreographers who were mentored by Smuin: internationally renown choreographer and principal character dancer at SFB Val Caniparoli, and the award-winning local favorite Amy Seiwert, Smuin Ballet’s choreographer in residence girls ballet slippers. Caniparoli’s piece, “Tutto Eccetto il Lavandino” (everything but the kitchen sink), celebrates the versatility of Smuin dancers and is set to the music of Antonio Vivaldi. Seiwert’s world premiere, “But Now I Must Rest,” draws inspiration from the music of the beloved Cape Verdian singer Cesária Évora, “The Queen of Morna.” Eccentric, indeed..

“As artistic director now for seven years, it was always my goal to engage and excite my dancers and in the process, engage and excite our audience. I choose choreographers who share a similar artistic sensibility and fearlessness that Michael exhibited as an artist,” says Fushille. “As the caretaker of Michael’s legacy, I try to instill in the dancers who never knew Michael some knowledge of him as an artist and an individual.”. As for the decades ahead, Fushille announced the company’s plans to find building of its own, with hopes of opening a dance school. “We are now poised to look to our future, training dancers that require more than just a solid classical technique. Training both the dancers and the dance lovers of the future is important.” girls ballet slippers.

According to immigration documents obtained by La Nacion, Rowland’s Destiny’s Child bandmates, Beyonce Knowles and Michelle Williams, were in the country, as well as Beyonce’s sister Solange and their mother, Tina girls ballet slippers. Jay Z wasn’t there. Which might or might not have something to do with Solange beating him up after the Met Gala early that week. Though no one has said whether there was a wedding or not, the couple is known for doing things simply and spontaneously, according to People..

“A woman entrepreneur coming out of a place like the Women’s Startup Lab will be better prepared,” said Andrea Rees Davies, associate director of the Clayman Institute for Gender Research at Stanford University. “These women will have the strategies to cope.” split sole ballet shoes target. The dearth of women startup founders not only perpetuates the inequality that has long plagued the tech industry, experts say, but also it creates a void of women role models needed to encourage more girls to pursue careers in tech..

The shortage of women in computer science is a well-documented problem — a quarter of Stanford University computer science degrees are awarded to women, and about 20 percent of the country’s computer programmers and software developers are women — and organizations and academic programs are working to push more girls into these fields. But experts say change can only happen when more mid-career women emerge as successful startup founders to inspire younger generations split sole ballet shoes target. “Once you see more Jack Dorseys that are women, you’ll start to see more girls majoring in computer science,” said Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers venture capitalist Stephanie Tilenius, referring to the co-founder of Twitter..

While none have yet risen to Twitter-like stardom, some startups coming out of the 1-year-old lab have seen success. Monique Giggy, a 35-year-old mother of two from Palo Alto, last week sold her company, Swing by Swing, a smartphone app that maps golf courses and keeps score. Liesl Capper joined the lab last fall and this month her Australian startup, Cognea, which makes virtual assistant software that responds with different personalities, was acquired by IBM. Neither price was disclosed split sole ballet shoes target. And San Francisco-based Style Lend, a peer-to-peer marketplace for renting designer dresses, grew 26 percent week over week during the first quarter of 2014..

Like other accelerators, the Women’s Startup Lab is a springboard for aspiring entrepreneurs to turn ideas into full-blown businesses, and founders to grow fledging companies. But the lab is also atypical: It doesn’t offer money or the chance to mingle with celebrities, and its focus is less on hitting revenue growth targets than instilling confidence and leadership skills. The women meet with life coaches and business advisers — some of whom are men — and gather for weekly problem-solving sessions split sole ballet shoes target. Many juggle their startup with picking up children from school and making sure the grocery shopping is done. Women must apply and pay $4,500, plus the lab takes a 2 percent stake in the company..

“They don’t have the luxury of just up and leaving their lives,” said lab founder Ari Horie, who has previously worked at IBM and a handful of mid-size startups. “They’ll work around the clock, but still leave to drive their kids to ballet and karate class.”. Alumni describe the experience as nurturing and supportive — in contrast to the hypercompetitive Y Combinator, where entrepreneurs hole up in Mountain View, leaving behind families to vie for investors’ attention split sole ballet shoes target.
